Scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabiei. These mites burrow into the upper layer of the skin where they live and lay eggs. Their presence triggers intense itching and an allergic-like rash that worsens at night.
Life Cycle
The female mite burrows into the skin to lay eggs. In 3 to 4 days, the eggs hatch into larvae. The larvae mature into adult mites in about 10 to 15 days and continue the cycle by spreading to new areas of skin or new hosts. Without treatment, this cycle repeats indefinitely.
