Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that live on the human scalp and feed on blood. They are especially common among school-aged children and can spread quickly through direct head-to-head contact. While not dangerous, they cause discomfort and are notoriously difficult to eliminate without a structured approach.
Where They Are Found
Head lice live close to the scalp, typically around the nape of the neck and behind the ears. They cling to hair shafts and crawl, but they do not jump or fly.
Symptoms
Itching is the most common symptom, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites. Other signs include a crawling sensation, red bumps or sores from scratching, and visible lice or their eggs (nits) attached to hair strands near the scalp.
