Sight Under Siege: Discovering the Eye Fluke Connection and your sight.
What are eye flukes? Eye flukes are mainly caused by parasitic flatworms, often from the genus Diplostomum. These parasites have a complex life cycle involving multiple hosts, including snails and fish. The flukes release larvae, called cercariae, from infected snails into water. These larvae actively seek out fish as their next host, where they migrate to the eyes and cause damage. Humans can become accidental hosts if they come into contact with contaminated water or consume infected fish.
