Schistosoma: The Overlooked Parasite Living in Human Blood

Schistosoma is a parasitic worm that infects millions of people worldwide, yet it remains one of the most overlooked causes of chronic illness. The parasite spreads when people come into contact with freshwater contaminated by snails carrying the larvae. Once inside the human body, the parasite develops into adult worms that live in blood vessels and release eggs. Some eggs are passed out of the body, but many become trapped in tissues, causing inflammation and long-term damage.
The Systems Affected
Schistosoma primarily targets the bloodstream, but its eggs become lodged in different organs, leading to wide-ranging symptoms.
Digestive system: Eggs trapped in the intestines and liver can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, blood in stool, and liver fibrosis.
