Parasitic infections affect billions of people worldwide. Human parasites generally fall into three categories. Protozoa, which are single celled organisms, helminths, which are worms, and ectoparasites, which live on the skin such as lice or mites.
Modern pharmaceutical medicine has developed a number of drugs designed to target specific parasites. Each medication works in a different way. Some interfere with the parasite’s ability to absorb nutrients. Others paralyse the parasite or damage its cellular structure.
Correct identification of the parasite is important because no single drug treats all parasites.
Dosage also depends on age, body weight, and the specific infection involved.
