How to identify Parasites eggs or whole parasitic organisms in your body. Parasites are organisms that live off the host, and in this case, the host is you. Human parasites can live in the intestines, blood, tissues, organs, or even under the skin. Many people have parasites for years without knowing it. This plain guide will help you recognize the signs and what each parasite looks like.
Main Types of Parasites in Humans
There are three main categories of parasites that affect humans:
1. Protozoa
These are microscopic, single-celled organisms that often live in the intestines or blood.
Giardia lamblia: Looks like a small teardrop with a face-like appearance under a microscope. Moves with flagella (tiny whip-like tails).
Entamoeba histolytica: Round and blob-like with a visible nucleus. It invades the intestines and can cause dysentery.
Plasmodium: Causes malaria. Found inside red blood cells. Appears as small ring-like or dot-like structures under a blood microscope.
2. Helminths (Worms)
These are large, multi-celled organisms that can usually be seen without a microscope.
Roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides): Long, white or pinkish worms that resemble earthworms. They can grow over 12 inches long.
Hookworms: Small, thin, and hook-shaped worms that attach to the intestines and suck blood. They are less than half an inch long.
Whipworms (Trichuris trichiura): Look like a whip with one thick end and one thin end. Usually a couple of inches long.
Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis): Tiny, white thread-like worms. Often seen around the anus or in underwear at night.
Tapeworms: Flat, ribbon-like worms that can grow several feet long. Segmented appearance. Segments may pass out in stool and look like grains of rice.
3. Ectoparasites
These live on or just under the skin.
Scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei): Tiny mites that burrow into the skin. Cannot be seen with the naked eye but cause visible tunnels and intense itching.
Lice: Small, wingless insects with six legs. Live in hair or clothing and are visible to the eye.
Fleas and mites: Tiny jumping insects or burrowing mites that cause itchy skin and red bumps.
Common Symptoms of Parasites
Parasites can cause a range of symptoms, many of which are often blamed on other health problems. Watch for:
Itchy anus, especially at night
Bloating or gas that comes and goes
Constipation or diarrhea
Sugar and carb cravings
Unexplained weight changes
Fatigue or brain fog
Skin problems such as rashes or hives
Teeth grinding during sleep
Trouble sleeping or waking up often
Mood swings or irritability
Muscle and joint aches
Iron deficiency or low B12
Chronic cough or sinus issues
Bad breath or strong body odor
How to Test for Parasites:
Some people choose to treat based on symptoms alone, but here are testing options:
Stool tests: Look for parasite eggs or whole organisms in your poop. Often miss infections unless repeated.
PCR stool tests: Use DNA technology to find parasites. More accurate but expensive.
Blood tests: Can detect some parasites that travel through the blood or look for immune responses.
Live blood analysis: A drop of blood is examined under a microscope. Used in alternative health clinics.
Ova and parasite test (O&P): Traditional lab test that looks for parasite eggs under a microscope.
Imaging: CT or MRI may find parasites in organs like the liver, lungs, or brain.
Biopsy: A tissue sample may be taken if parasites are suspected in skin or organs.
When Are Parasites Most Active?
Parasites tend to be more active during the full moon. This is because your body’s serotonin levels rise, and parasites feed off this shift. You may notice itching, insomnia, bloating, and anxiety increase during this time.
Risk Factors for Parasites - You may be more at risk if you:
Eat raw or undercooked meat or fish
Travel to areas with poor sanitation
Drink unfiltered or untreated water
Have pets that are not regularly dewormed
Walk barefoot in soil
Have poor hygiene or work in childcare or animal care
Swim in lakes, rivers, or pools that may be contaminated
