Flea Bites causing Health Issues for both Pets and their Humans

Fleas are tiny parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals, commonly associated with pets but capable of infesting homes and causing various health issues for humans. Their presence is more than just an annoyance; it can lead to significant health concerns.

Common Symptoms of a Flea Infestation

Flea bites manifest as small, red, itchy bumps, often appearing in clusters or straight lines. Intense itching may lead to excessive scratching, allergic reactions, or skin infections. In severe cases, flea infestations can result in anaemia due to blood loss and are known vectors for diseases like typhus, plague, and tapeworms.

Fleas undergo a four-stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The complete cycle can range from two weeks to several months. Adult fleas consume blood and can lay up to 50 eggs daily. These eggs drop off the host into the environment, where they hatch into larvae. Larvae feed on organic debris before spinning cocoons and maturing into adults.

Common Habitats of the Flea

Fleas are typically found on pets, especially around the neck, tail base, and belly. When they bite humans, they tend to target lower legs, ankles, and the waistline. Fleas do not burrow into the skin but they can inhabit hair, clothing, carpets, bedding, and upholstery. They are resilient creatures, capable of surviving for weeks without a blood meal and can jump significant distances, making containment challenging.

Treatments

Pet owners can now choose between commercial chemical products or ancient, proven, and effective natural remedies. If you are dealing with a heavy flea infestation, you may want to hit it hard treating both the animal and the environment. To follow the ancient wisdom of "Prevention is Better than a Cure" and to avoid the deeply unpleasant experience of a home infestation, there are some very effective natural flea treatments which can prevent fleas from hitching a lift on your pet in the first place. Some of these treatments can be created very easily from ingredients you may already have in your kitchen

Several Natural, Herbal and Pharmaceutical options offer effective treatments for flea infestations:

For your Pet

Common treatments include oral medications like NexGard and Bravecto, as well as topical solutions such as Frontline.

Natural Topical Flea treatments include the use of Shampoos with Essential Oils such as Lemon Eucalyptus, Baking Soda, Patchouli, Geraniol, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Catnip and Peppermint.

Apple cider vinegar is effective as a homemade flea spray for dogs or by adding it to their drinking water.

Neem oil*, diluted and applied to the skin or added to shampoos

Diatomaceous earth* (food grade) can be sprinkled in the home to dehydrate and kill fleas

For Humans

Honey: The catalase enzyme in honey provides relief from itching and minor inflammation.

Tea Tree Oil: Applied diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut, tea tree oil can help relieve itching and promote healing due to its antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Witch Hazel: This natural astringent has anti-inflammatory and cooling properties that can reduce swelling, calm itching, and prevent infection.

Permethrin* creams or sprays for application on the body and clothing

Supporting the Body Internally

Flea bites can provoke immune responses and inflammation, making it vital to support the body's detoxification processes.

Binders such as activated charcoal or bentonite clay can help eliminate toxins released by flea bites or secondary infections.

Probiotics are crucial for maintaining gut health and immune function, particularly if there are inflammation or histamine reactions.

Nutrients including: Vitamin C, Quercetin, and Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce itching and promote healing.

Addressing flea infestations requires a comprehensive approach that considers both internal and external factors. It is essential to treat the environment, care for the body, and support the immune system to ensure complete recovery and prevent re-infestation.
